I'm sure it serves an important purpose. This is a live news broadcast. They need to stay in their seats and focused during commercial breaks. It reminds me a lot of the pattern games and warm-ups that actors and improvisers do to warm up before performances. They're marking time and getting themselves ready to go back on the air. I think it's really cool and professional.
